Mark Twain National Forest stays beautiful because visitors take care of it. The seven Leave No Trace principles are an easy way to do your part.

  1. Plan ahead and prepare. Know the rules, the weather and your route.
  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces. Stay on trails and use existing campsites.
  3. Dispose of waste properly. Pack out all trash, including food scraps.
  4. Leave what you find. Rocks, plants and historic items stay where they are.
  5. Minimize campfire impacts. Use existing fire rings, keep fires small and follow any fire restrictions.
  6. Respect wildlife. Watch from a distance and never feed animals.
  7. Be considerate of other visitors. Keep noise down and yield on the trail.

Don’t move firewood

Firewood can carry invasive insects that kill trees. Buy or gather firewood near where you will burn it instead of bringing it from home.
