A Fantastic Nature Spot in Missouri

Come enjoy a natural, little piece of Missouri at Johnson Shut-ins State Park. Swimming is the most popular activity in the park. Visitors will enjoy wading and exploring in the natural swimming holes that have been carved into the rock by the East Fork of the Black River, creating the shut-ins.

Hiking at the Shut-Ins

Hiking Johnson Shut-Ins is another year-round activity that is fun for the whole family. Hiking trails are clearly marked, and there are plenty of places to stop and take in the views, making the hike a comfortable, enjoyable experience.

The Black River Center

Also, be sure to check out the Black River Center, a huge visitors center and gift shop. The center has information on area wildlife and plant life, along with details about the area’s geological history. It is also a great place to find information on hiking and other activities in the area. Additionally, there is a large conference room available for rent in the Center.

The Place to Relax

Johnson Shut-ins State Park offers many covered pavilions with picnic tables that are great for a picnic lunch in the shade or holding small gatherings. The pavilions are located throughout the park and offer a great way to take advantage of the beautiful scenery in the area. After a great family hike, sit down and relax while the kids play on the large playground in the picnic area.

Visit the River Store

Before reaching the main trail, you’ll want to stop and visit the River Store. Sit out on the deck and enjoy a cold ice cream, snack, coffee, or soda before you hit the trails for the day or make it a refreshing stop before your journey home. Also, check out the souvenir shop inside to pick up
your Johnson Shut-Ins memorabilia. Restrooms are located throughout the park, and there are flushing bathrooms available at the Black River Center. Less than ¼ mile up the main trail is a fantastic observation deck that gives visitors breathtaking views of Johnson Shut-Ins State Park.

Extended Stays at Johnson Shut-Ins

If you would like to extend your stay at Johnson Shut-Ins, register for camping at one of the campsites available on any of 5 loops. The Shut-Ins offer equestrian camping with electric and water; primitive walk-in sites with no amenities; basic sites that offer water; electric sites; and sites that offer sewer/water/electric. Reservations are only available from April 1st to October 31st. Camping fees are required. Camper Cabins are available for booking as well.

Plan Your Next Family Adventure

Visit Johnson Shut-Ins State Park for your next family adventure, located less than half an hour from Ironton, Missouri. Beginning in Ironton, go East on Russell Street toward S Knob Street for 0.2 miles. Then, turn Left onto MO-21 N. After 4.3 miles, follow MO-21 N to the left for another half mile. Take another left onto State Highway N and follow it for 12.8 miles until you reach your next left turn. In 157 feet, Johnson Shut-Ins State Park will be on the Right.

March 1st - Wednesday before Memorial Day: 8:00am - 6:00pm daily

Thursday before Memorial Day - Labor Day: 8:00am - 7:00pm daily

Day after Labor Day - October 31st: 8:00am - 6:00pm daily

November - February: 8:00am - 4:00pm daily
